GENERIC NAME: NITRAZEPAM - ORAL CAPSULE, TABLET (nye-TRAY-zeh-pam)Medication Uses | How To Use | Side Effects | Precautions | Drug Interactions | Overdose | Notes | Missed Dose | Storage USES: This medication is used to treat a sleeping problem (insomnia). It is also used to treat certain types of seizures. HOW TO USE: Take this medication by mouth exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not increase your dose, use it more frequently or use it for a longer period of time than prescribed because this drug can be habit-forming. Also, if used for an extended period, do not suddenly stop using this drug without your doctor's approval. Over time, this drug may not work as well. Consult your doctor if this medication stops working well. If this is used to treat insomnia, take the dose just before bedtime. SIDE EFFECTS: Drowsiness, dizziness, lightheadedness, fatigue, or loss of coordination may occur. Headache, stomach upset, mental confusion, diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting rarely occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, inform your doctor. Notify your doctor if you develop: a rapid/pounding/irregular heartbeat, changes in vision, slurred speech, confusion, depression, irritability, behavioral changes. In the unlikely event you have a serious allergic reaction to this drug, seek immediate medical attention. Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist. PRECAUTIONS: Tell your doctor your medical history, especially of: kidney disease, liver disease, muscle problems (myasthenia gravis), chemical dependence, depression, any allergies. Since this medication may cause drowsiness or dizziness, use caution operating machinery or engaging in activities requiring alertness such as driving. Limit intake of alcohol while using this medication because the drowsiness and/or dizziness effects may increase. Elderly patients may be more sensitive to the effects of this medication. Use cautiously. This medication is not recommended for use during pregnancy. Consult your doctor before using this medication. Nitrazepam passes into breast milk and may have undesirable effects on a nursing infant. Its use is not recommended while breast-feeding. Consult your doctor.
