Patient Comments: Neck Pain - Causes

What caused your neck pain?

My neck pain started with having a stiff neck and I thought a good massage will sort the problem out. I had plenty of knots and it was very painfull having the massage. After the massage it got a lot worse and causes severe headaches. The pain is now in my neck and between my shoulder blades and head. I have tried heat, muscle relaxants, pain killers and posture improvement and nothing seems to work. I can feel hard lumps on the right side of my spine and towards my ear. My neck crunches at every movements and if I pull my neck back it clicks all the way down my upper back.

Everytime I fall asleep in a car, plane or bus seats, I wake up with pain in the neck. Sometimes it gets better after moving for a while, other times it lasts for days. Other times, stress gets it started, but mostly will start if I guess I don't sleep in the correct position that night. I have not found the best treatment yet, and x-rays shows everything is fine.

I dislocated my neck at age 24 after a riding accident, I'm now 63 and have suffered since then from constant sharp shooting pain and spasms. No painkillers work, I have had facet joint injections, epidurals, cortisone injections and radio frequency treatment, nothing gives me relief and it's ruining my life as I can't sleep as can't bear any pressure on my neck. I suffer from constant headaches but no one can tell me why!

My neck hurts when I turn my head to the right, left, or up and down. I often hear a "crack" when turning my head up or down. I also feel as though the gland on my right side of the neck is swollen. This has been going on now for several months and is not getting any better. Ben Gay does absolutely nothing for relief.

Chronic stiff neck. Right side of neck just below base of cranium. In a certain position I can hear a popping sound which is audible to my wife. It is not constant just annoying. Mostly irritated by lying down and trying to sleep. It's irritated by looking to the left while driving and sitting. Have been adjusted by a chiropractor with little success. Most recently went to the ER because after waking up the muscles tightened so much it was painful enough to cause me to wince until I was able to relax. X-rays show nothing unusual. Muscle relaxers and steroids have been my treatment for the last week. I am not sedentary. Run 20 to 25 miles per week . Actually running does not cause any pain at all.

I had four seizures a week ago and one of them lasted for more than 11 minutes. When I finally awoke the first thing I felt was terrible pain in my shoulders, up my neck and when I move my neck or arms I want to cry, I don't know what it could be I went to the hospital they took X-rays of my lungs.
