GENERIC NAME: MULTIVITAMINS (INCLUDES PRENATAL VITAMINS) - ORAL

WARNING: Accidental overdose of iron-containing products is a leading cause of fatal poisoning in children under 6 years of age. Keep this product out of reach of children. If an accidental overdose does occur, seek immediate medical attention or call a poison control center.

USES: Vitamins are the building blocks of the body. They are used to prevent or treat a vitamin deficiency due to poor nutrition, certain illnesses or during pregnancy.

HOW TO USE: Take as directed. Food may affect the absorption of certain vitamin products. However, some vitamin products may be best taken with food. Consult your pharmacist.

SIDE EFFECTS: This medication may cause mild nausea or unpleasant taste. Consult your doctor if any of these effects persist or become severe. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

PRECAUTIONS: Before taking this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: certain blood disorders (e.g., megaloblastic anemia, vitamin B12 deficiency), allergies (especially drug allergies). If your particular brand of multivitamin also contains folic acid, be sure to tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have a vitamin B12 deficiency (pernicious anemia) before taking it.

DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and nonprescription drugs you may use. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.

OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. US residents can call the US national poison hotline at 1-800-222-1222. Canadian residents should call their local poison control center directly. Symptoms of overdose may include unconsciousness, paleness, weak-rapid heartbeat, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, or green diarrhea/tarry stools.

NOTES: If your particular brand of multivitamin also contains folic acid, vitamin B12 levels should be checked periodically. There are many vitamin supplement products available. Some can be purchased without a prescription. Consult your doctor or pharmacist on the choice of a product best for you.

MISSED DOSE: Take the missed dose as soon as you remember; do not take if it is almost time for the next dose. Instead, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not "double-up" the dose to catch up.

STORAGE: Store at room temperature away from sunlight and moisture. Keep out of the reach of children.

Introduction to spina bifida

The human nervous system develops from a small, specialized plate of cells along the back of an embryo. Early in development, the edges of this plate begin to curl up toward each other, creating the neural tube—a narrow sheath that closes to form the brain and spinal cord of the embryo. As development progresses, the top of the tube becomes the brain and the remainder becomes the spinal cord. This process is usually complete by the 28th day of pregnancy.
