USES: This medication is used on the skin to treat acne.

HOW TO USE: This medication is for use on the skin only. Clean and dry the affected area before applying this medication. Apply a small amount to the affected area and rub in gently. A thin layer is all that is needed. Wash hands after use. Do not use this more often or for longer than directed. Your condition will not clear faster, and the chance for side effects may be increased. Avoid contact with the eyes.

SIDE EFFECTS: This medication may cause redness, burning, dry skin, itching or eye irritation. Notify your doctor if these symptoms continue. Notify your doctor if you develop: skin rash. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

PRECAUTIONS: Tell your doctor if you have: kidney disease, liver disease, allergies (especially to formaldehyde). This medication should be used only if clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. Small amounts of this medication may be found in breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of any over-the-counter or prescription medication you use, especially of: all skin products. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.

OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. US residents can call the US national poison hotline at 1-800-222-1222. Canadian residents should call their local poison control center directly. This medicine may be harmful if swallowed.

NOTES: It may take weeks or months of therapy with this medication to treat acne. Follow your doctor's instructions and keep all appointments so the effectiveness of this therapy can be monitored.

MISSED DOSE: If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as remembered; do not apply it if it is near the time for the next dose, instead, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not "double-up" the dose to catch up.

STORAGE: Store at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) away from heat. Check the expiration date on the tube and discard any expired medication.

What is acne?

Acne (acne vulgaris, common acne) is a disease of the hair follicles of the face, chest, and back that affects almost all males and females during puberty; the only exception being teenage members of a few primitive isolated tribes living in Neolithic societies. It is not caused by bacteria, although bacteria play a role in its development. It is not unusual for some women to develop acne in their mid- to late-20s.
