USES: This medication is an anti-inflammatory agent used to relieve pain, reduce swelling (inflammation) of arthritis and reduce fever.
HOW TO USE: Take this medication by mouth with food or a full glass of milk or water (8oz. or 240 ml) as directed by your doctor. The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to therapy. If you are taking this medication for pain or fever and there is no improvement within 5 days, stop taking this drug and consult your doctor or pharmacist.
SIDE EFFECTS: Heartburn, nausea, vomiting, and headache may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these serious side effects occur: stomach pain, ringing in the ears, changes in your hearing. If you notice any of the following unlikely but very serious side effects, stop taking this drug and consult your doctor or pharmacist immediately: bloody or black stools, coffee-ground vomit, persistent stomach/abdominal pain. An allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice any other side effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
PRECAUTIONS: Tell your doctor your medical history, especially of: kidney or liver disease, stomach/intestinal ulcers, any allergies (especially to aspirin). This medication may cause stomach bleeding. Daily use of alcohol and this medication may increase your risk for stomach bleeding. Caution is advised when using this drug in the elderly because they may be more sensitive to the effects of the drug. Children and teenagers should not take this medication if they have chicken pox, influenza, or any undiagnosed illness without first consulting a doctor about Reye's syndrome, a rare but serious illness. This medication should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. Magnesium salicylate is excreted into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
