How does Lactoferrin work?

Lactoferrin seems to have antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal activity. It might prevent growth of bacteria by depriving them of essential nutrients or kill bacterial by destroying the bacterial cell wall.

Are there safety concerns?

Lactoferrin is safe in amounts consumed in food. Consuming higher amounts of lactoferrin from cow's milk might also be safe for up to a year. Human lactoferrin that is biochemically synthesized appears to be safe for up to 14 days. Lactoferrin can cause diarrhea. In very high doses, skin rash, loss of appetite, fatigue, chills, and constipation have been reported.

Do not use lactoferrin if:
  • You are pregnant or breast-feeding.

Dosing considerations for Lactoferrin.

The following doses have been studied in scientific research:

  • For treating hepatitis C: 1.8 to 3.6 grams of lactoferrin from cows (bovine lactoferrin) per day.
