Patient Comments: Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) - Treatments

What was your treatment for irritable bowel syndrome?

I went and had every test you could have to find out what was wrong after experiencing symptoms of sharp stomach pain. Watery bowels and losing 30lbs in 2 months. I could only eat crackers, chicken noodle soup, yogurt and apples. After visiting a No Name Nutrition store I learned that Alfalfa and Aloe water would help. I started drinking 2 oz of Aloe water before eating and taking a fiber pill at night to help make anything I ate more solid. After two days I was able to slowly add different things in my diet. This aloe water and fiber pill saved my life. My doctor also gave me a pill to help relax my stomach muscles without making me tired. I wanted to share this because I have had reoccurring IBS all my life and when I go back to the Aloe I'm usually well in 2-3 days. Hope it works for some of you out there.

I have suffered from IBS for over 25 years I am 46 years old I was put on disability due to an accident and have chronic pain and just told fibromyalgia. Levesin SL has been a life saver for the last 20 years until Medicare took the generic off the formula and told me to get it in Canada. I am very disappointed I am wondering if you have any ideas I have been on just about all there is and gone through all the endosc. sig. colonoscopies. I just want the medication that works and my surgery certificate was taken away due to my injuries.

I never went through any scans or endoscopies for my irritable bowel syndrome, just some stool samples and blood work. My doctor wrote prescriptions for Dicyclomine 3x/day and now I no longer have any bloating or gas pains and my bowl movements are more regular! I am a happy camper again!

While in high school I began to experience frequent bouts of gastroenteritis, especially with diarrhea. I went from doctor to doctor as no visible cause could be found. Eventually I received diagnosis of IBS-D (diarrhea predominant irritable bowel syndrome). Currently I am taking dicyclomine as it helps but little. To make matters worse I also have some degree of fecal incontinence which has let to some public embarrassments (bowel accidents) as well.

I had morning diarrhea daily that had mucous. I didn't give much attention to this, but eventually started to feel fatigue and developed a bad case of dizziness. During one occasion, which lasted the entire day, I even blacked-out. I had very bad sleeping patterns that left me more awake than asleep. I finally found ayurvedic treatment. Since I'm from Sri Lanka, I was able to find good ayurvedic doctors, who can and are familiar with IBS. Good ayurvedic doctors diagnose diseases and conditions by feeling and listening to the patients pulse. Treatment lasted for 2 ½ months, and included a very strict diet, and an oil that I had to massage into my scalp daily that included seven pressure points on the head. Now, all of my symptoms are gone. As for my diet, there are foods that I will not be able to eat at all, like pork, processed meats and foods, and stale oil, to name a few, But that's a very small price to pay. I hope this information helps those of you who are searching for answers.

I have experienced IBS for about 10 years. It seems to be aggravated by wine and sorbitol, among other things. Taking Metamucil every day helps. Also, I take glycopyrrolate by prescription. The attacks are some of the worst pain I have ever experienced and so I avoid anything that triggers them.
