Patient Comments: Fibromyalgia - Treatments

What treatment has been effective for your fibromyalgia?

I just want to let people know that there is NO SUCH THING as Fibromyalgia! This information came from one of the many doctors that my son saw a couple of years ago that tried to lump him into this category. After a doctor told him that is what was wrong with him. We said ok finally an answer. Boy were we wrong. That was no an answer, because the doctors couldn't find what was wrong with him and because they couldn't see what/where his pain was, they lumped him into that category. Finally an honest doctor told us that is not a REAL diagnosis and there is NO such thing. You get lumped into the "Fibromyalgia category" when either the doctor gives or you do!! He suggested that he have a muscle biopsy. They did it and sent it off to Duke University and they found that my son had a rare form of Muscular Dystrophy! Don't fail yourself; make the doctors do their jobs! There is no unexplained reason why you hurt. Find your reason!

I am 40 years old. I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia about 4 years ago. Before diagnosis my life was painful and I was driving everyone away because of the pain and depression that was debilitating me. I am currently taking Celexa for pain management and the management of depression. I don't know why this drug works for me but I have tried living without it since starting it and when I'm not taking it I am not functional. My pain and moods are unbearable. It has been helpful. I also take trazodone for restless leg when needed. Eating healthy, getting sleep, and knowing my limits have also helped me greatly. I was in agony physically and emotionally before being diagnosed and accepting that I had fibromyalgia. Now most days are bearable and I look forward to what each day brings. Of course I am always aware of my body and it's needs and am no longer in denial but dealing with being a fibromyalgia sufferer.

I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia, ever since I have been battling this pain, I don't take any prescription medications. I tried Cymbalta then Lyrica, no relief. I tried this; I stay away from Canned foods, Foods containing MSG, Gluten and other additives. I try to eat fresh and healthy. I make an effort to eat fresh food at home. The second, is massage, I get a relief from the pain. The third thing is exercise, especially stretching. The last thing is take warm bath and stay warm. There also a pain reliever called biofreeze it's very helpful. If you have trouble sleeping try to relax take a good bath before going to bed, make sure the bedroom is cozy. Stay away from light just relax.

I've had fibromyalgia for four years and I have been through the ringer as far as treatments have gone. In addition to fibromyalgia I have permanent pain/damage in the back of my head and jaw from brain surgery and I have a slipped disc in my neck from a very near fatal car accident. But the fibromyalgia pain is just terrible. My joints ache and my muscles twitch and have pain in every spot on my body where muscle meets the bone. My body doesn't react well to antidepressants (I have tried Savella, Elavil Cymbalta, Lexapro, Pristiq, Zoloft, and Prozac). The only antidepressant that helped with the pain is Savella and that made me violently ill to my stomach. I do take Lyrica which helps the pain a little but it doesn't scratch the surface. I have tried a gluten-free diet, acupuncture, massage, light cardio, heating pads, ice packs and physical therapy. The only thing that helps is massage but it only helps while you're getting the massage, once it is finished it doesn't feel good, and massages get expensive. The only thing that's helped has been pain medications and muscle relaxants. I don't get those studies that say narcotics don't help with fibromyalgia symptoms because if not for the pain medications I couldn't get out of bed in the morning. I am currently taking Methadone, Oxycodone, Valium (for muscle spasms), Ambien CR (for sleep obviously), Fioricet (for tension headaches) and of course the Lyrica. These medications are also for my other chronic pain problems. They really need to get better medications on the market that are targeted just for fibromyalgia.
