GENERIC NAME: FENUGREEK (Trigonella foenum-graecum) - ORAL

USES: Fenugreek seed has been used for stomach upset, swelling (inflammation) of the upper air passages or throat, appetite, for lowering blood sugar, and for softening the stool. It also has been used as a gargle to relieve sore throat, and as an external dressing for swelling (local inflammation). Some herbal/diet supplement products have been found to contain possibly harmful impurities/additives. Check with your pharmacist for more details regarding the particular brand you use. The FDA has not reviewed this product for safety or effectiveness. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for more details.

HOW TO USE: Take this product by mouth as directed. Follow all directions on the product package. If you are uncertain about any of the information, consult your doctor or pharmacist. The fiber content of fenugreek may decrease the absorption of other medications. Separate doses of fenugreek from other medicines by at least two hours. If your condition persists or worsens, or if you think you may have a serious medical problem, seek immediate medical attention.

SIDE EFFECTS: Stomach upset may occur when a large quantity of fenugreek has been used. If this effect persists or worsens, contact your doctor promptly. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

PRECAUTIONS: The liquid preparations of this product may contain sugar and/or alcohol. Caution is advised if you have diabetes, alcohol dependence or liver disease. Ask your doctor or pharmacist about the safe use of this product. Fenugreek is not recommended for use during pregnancy. Consult your doctor before using this product. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

What causes a sore throat?

A sore throat can have many causes including:

  1. Common viruses, and even the viruses that cause mononucleosis (mono) and the flu, can cause a sore throat. Some viruses can also produce blisters in the mouth and throat ("aphthous stomatitis").

  2. Breathing through the mouth can produce throat dryness and soreness.

  3. Sinus drainage (post nasal drip) may cause a sore throat.

  4. A sore throat can also be caused by bacteria. The two most common bacteria to cause a sore throat are Streptococcus (which causes strep throat) and Arcanobacterium haemolyticum. Arcanobacterium causes sore throats mainly in young adults and is sometimes associated with a fine red rash.
