WARNING: I.V. fat emulsions must be used with extreme caution in premature or low birth weight infants. Fats have been reported to build up in their lungs and fatalities have occurred. These infants must be carefully monitored when using IV fat emulsions.
USES: Fats are used by the body as a source of calories needed to provide the energy and nutrients for various bodily functions. This medication is used in people who are unable to eat properly.
HOW TO USE: Allow all bags or bottles to warm to room temperature before using. This nutritional supplement is administered intravenously as directed by a certified health care professional. It is infused over a predetermined time period stated on the bottle.
SIDE EFFECTS: The most common side effect of intravenous nutrition is infection or irritation of the vein at the administration site (catheter). This should be reported to your doctor. Also report: shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting, headache, flushing, sweating, sleepiness. Notify your doctor immediately if you experience: itchy hives, sudden weight gain, fever, chills, yellowing of the skin or eyes, darkening urine, bruising, stomach pain. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
PRECAUTIONS: Tell your doctor if you have any pre-existing conditions, such as: kidney disease, digestive disorders, other illness, any allergies. This medication should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. It is not known if this medication is excreted into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
