ethionamide-oral (cont.)
PRECAUTIONS: Before taking this drug, tell your doctor your medical history, including: any allergies (especially drug allergies), liver disease, diabetes. Limit alcohol intake since alcohol can increase the drowsiness effect of this medication and also affect your liver. Use caution when performing activities requiring alertness. This medication should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. It is not known whether this drug is excreted into human milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of all nonprescription and prescription medication you may use, especially cycloserine and isoniazid. These drugs may be used with caution in tuberculosis patients when clearly necessary for combination treatment. Medications that can increase the drowsiness effect of this drug include: sedatives, tranquilizers, drugs for sleep, narcotic pain relievers, psychiatric medications (e.g., chlorpromazine), certain antidepressants (e.g., amitriptyline), certain antihistamines (e.g., diphenhydramine), muscle relaxants, anti- seizure medications. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. US residents can call the US national poison hotline at 1-800-222-1222. Canadian residents should call their local poison control center directly.
NOTES: This medication has been prescribed for your current condition only. Do not use it later for another infection or give it to others. A different medication may be needed in those cases.
MISSED DOSE: If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not "double-up" the dose to catch up.
STORAGE: Store at room temperature at approximately 77 degrees F (25 degrees C) away from light and moisture.
