Patient Comments: Upper Endoscopy (EGD) - Preparation

In what ways did you prepare for your upper endoscopy?

Comment from: Carrie, 35-44 Female (Patient) Published: November 20

The preparation for the upper endoscopy I had yesterday was very minimal. I had to stop eating all solid foods at midnight the night before. Then since it wasn't scheduled until 1:00 in the afternoon I was allowed to have a clear liquid breakfast. Six hours before the procedure I wasn't allowed to have anything else, not even water. I was also told to take my prescription medicines at least 6 hours before and to discontinue taking all over the counter medicines the night before.

My endoscopy was performed yesterday morning at a facility especially set up for gastric problems. I had to fast from midnight the night before, meaning no food or drink. Everything was easy and went as expected.

To prepare for my upper endoscopy, I stopped eating 25 hours to the procedure time and only drank clear liquids up to two hours before the procedure.
