Patient Comments: Endocarditis - Symptoms

What were the symptoms associated with endocarditis for you or someone you know?

My first symptom was a loss of appetite, I was losing 4 pounds per week. I had night sweats, tired all of the time. My physician was convinced it was an upper gastro intestinal issue and I went through testing for that. I then had a sharp pain in my right arm on the inner arm at the elbow bend. I later found out it was an infection from the vegetation that had broken off from my aortic valve. It took about 6 weeks until my physician ordered a blood culture that showed the blood infection and led to a 7 week hospital stay, a valve and root replacement/repair. I also had to have the ulnar blood vessel replaced by a vein from my leg due to the infection in the arm. My heart stopped in ICU after the first operation but I was revived by CPR (Cardiopulmonary resuscitation). Even though my physician missed the diagnosis and put my life in jeopardy I feel fortunate the surgeons were on top of it and saved my life. I will look for second opinions in the future.

The endocarditis symptoms began as flu-like symptoms with chills, low grade fever, slight dizziness, fatigue, and minor headache. I had major night sweats and weight loss after that. I also had a cough which may or may not have been related.

My symptom was, I was totally exhausted. I had a new born and a 1 1/2 year old and I could not stay awake and I had horrible night sweats. I would sleep with the window wide open in winter and wake up soaking wet.
