GENERIC NAME: ENALAPRIL-DILTIAZEM EXTENDED RELEASE - ORAL (eh-NAL-uh-pril/dill-TIE-uh-zem)

WARNING: This drug can cause serious fetal harm if used during the last six months of pregnancy. If pregnancy occurs, stop using this drug and immediately contact your physician.

USES: This medication is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension).

OTHER USES: This medication may also be used for heart failure or to protect the kidney in certain medical conditions.

HOW TO USE: Take by mouth exactly as directed by your doctor, usually once daily. Swallow tablet(s) whole. Do not divide, crush or chew them. An empty tablet shell may appear in your stool. This is harmless. Full effect on blood pressure may require several weeks. Dose may be adjusted depending on your response and medical condition. Before using potassium supplements or salt substitutes that contain potassium, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

SIDE EFFECTS: Cough, headache, dizziness, nausea, or constipation may occur. If these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor. Contact lens wearers may develop eye dryness. Report promptly: sinus congestion, sore throat with fever. Unlikely but report promptly: new or increased swelling, fatigue, chest pain, unusually fast or slow heart beat, gum swelling, stomach pain, back pain, fainting. Very unlikely but report promptly: yellowing skin or eyes, diarrhea, vomiting, excessive sweating, persistent infections, bleeding or easy bruising, mood/mental changes, muscle cramps or weakness, arthritis, blurred vision, dry eyes, painful urination, cloudy or unusual change in amount of urine. In the unlikely event you have an allergic reaction to this product, seek immediate medical attention. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

What is high blood pressure?

High blood pressure (HBP) or hypertension means high pressure (tension) in the arteries. Arteries are vessels that carry blood from the pumping heart to all the tissues and organs of the body. High blood pressure does not mean excessive emotional tension, although emotional tension and stress can temporarily increase blood pressure. Normal blood pressure is below 120/80; blood pressure between 120/80 and 139/89 is called "pre-hypertension", and a blood pressure of 140/90 or above is considered high.

The top number, the systolic blood pressure, corresponds to the pressure in the arteries as the heart contracts and pumps blood forward into the arteries. The bottom number, the diastolic pressure, represents the pressure in the arteries as the heart relaxes after the contraction. The diastolic pressure reflects the lowest pressure to which the arteries are exposed.
