DIAZEPAM EMULSION-INJECTION

GENERIC NAME: DIAZEPAM EMULSION - INJECTION (dye-AZZ-eh-pam)

USES: This medication has a calming effect. It helps to relieve anxiety, nervousness and tension. It may be used to treat symptoms of alcohol withdrawal, to relieve anxiety prior to surgical or other procedures or to relieve muscle spasms.

HOW TO USE: This medication is given by injection into a muscle o slow injection into a vein by a health care professional. The dose and frequency of use is based on your condition and response. Do not use this more often, increase your dose or use this longer than directed without consulting your doctor.

SIDE EFFECTS: Drowsiness, dizziness, incoordination, dry mouth, headache or constipation may occur. If any of these effects continue or become bothersome, inform your doctor. Notify your doctor if you develop: a rapid/pounding/irregular heartbeat, skin rash, vision changes, slurred speech, confusion, depression or behavior changes. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

PRECAUTIONS: Tell your doctor if you have: kidney problems, liver disease, glaucoma, muscle weakness, history of chemical dependence, psychiatric illness or depression, allergies (especially to drugs or eggs). This medication may cause drowsiness or dizziness. Use caution operating machinery or engaging in activities requiring alertness. Limit intake of alcohol while using this medication since it may aggravate drowsiness and dizziness. The elderly may be more sensitive to the effects of this medication. This medication is not recommended for use during pregnancy. Consult your doctor for details. Diazepam passes into breast milk and has had undesirable effects on nursing infants. Using this medication while breast-feeding is not recommended.

DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of any over-the-counter or prescription medication you may take, especially of: anti-seizure drugs, antidepressants, narcotic pain relievers (e.g., codeine), sleeping pills, tranquilizers, cimetidine. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
