How does Cocoa work?
Cocoa contains a variety of chemicals, including antioxidants called flavonoids. It is not clear how these might work in the body, but they appear to cause relaxation of veins. This could lead to lower blood pressure.
Are there safety concerns?
Consuming cocoa is safe for most people. Cocoa contains caffeine and related chemicals. Consuming large amounts might cause caffeine-related side effects such as nervousness, sleeplessness, and a fast heartbeat. Cocoa butter used on the skin appears to be safe for most people.
Do not use cocoa in large doses if:
- You are pregnant or breast-feeding.
- You have a history of anxiety attacks.
- You have acid reflux disease.
- You have migraine headaches.
- You have diabetes.
- You have a rapid heartbeat known as an arrhythmia.
- You are scheduled for surgery in the next two weeks.
