clindamycin-injection (cont.)
PRECAUTIONS: Before using this drug, tell your doctor your medical history especially of: liver or kidney disease, stomach or abdominal problems (colitis), any drug allergies. Make sure needles, tubing and supplies are stored safely and disposed of properly. A preservative (benzyl alcohol) which may be found in this product or in the liquid used to mix this product (diluent) can infrequently cause serious problems (sometimes death), if given in large amounts (more than 100 mg/kg daily) to an infant during the first months of life (neonatal period). The risk is also greater with low birth weight infants. Symptoms include sudden gasping, low blood pressure, or a very slow heartbeat. Report these symptoms to the doctor immediately should they occur. If possible, a preservative-free product should be used when treating neonates. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant before using this drug. This drug is excreted into breast milk. Though no problems have been noted, consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: Before you use this drug, tell your doctor about any other drugs you are taking including nonprescription drugs. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. US residents can call the US national poison hotline at 1-800-222-1222. Canadian residents should call their local poison control center directly.
NOTES: This medication has been prescribed for your current condition only. Do not use it later for another infection or give it to someone else. A different medication may be necessary in those cases.
MISSED DOSE: If you should miss a dose, use it as soon as remembered unless it is almost time for the next dose. If it is nearly time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not "double-up" the dose.
STORAGE: This medication must be stored properly. Review storage instruction with your doctor or pharmacist. Premixed frozen bags are to be stored in the freezer before thawing. After thawing at room temperature store bags in refrigerator. Do not refreeze. Let a refrigerated bag sit at room temperature at least one hour before using. All reconstituted solutions should be stored in the refrigerator. Store vials at room temperature away from sunlight. Check expiration date before using.
