Please share your experience with high cholesterol levels.

My total cholesterol level has always been high, so is HDL level and triglyceride is low, why do doctors give satins to lower the total level? I feel all the people are different, how can we all have the same level of cholesterol? Had some terrible side effects with satins, really don't want to take them.
