GENERIC NAME: BISACODYL - RECTAL ENEMA (biss-ACK-oh-dill)

USES: Bisacodyl is a laxative. The enema is used to clear the intestine before rectal or bowel examinations.

HOW TO USE: To use the enema, follow the instructions provided in the package. Unwrap the enema. Lie on your left side with one knee bent up to your chest. Insert the enema tip into the rectum pointing toward the navel and gently squeeze the bottle to release the medication. Try to retain the medication for as long as possible. Be sure to follow any special dietary restrictions given based on the type and timing of the procedure being done.

SIDE EFFECTS: This medication may cause severe diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, rectal irritation, stomach cramps, or bloating. If these effects continue or become bothersome, inform your doctor. Notify your doctor if you experience: rectal bleeding, a rapid heart rate, weakness, dizziness, fainting, sweating, skin rash, unrelieved constipation. Prolonged, frequent or excessive use of enemas may lead to dependency. Liver damage has been reported with use of multiple bisacodyl enemas. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

PRECAUTIONS: Tell your doctor if you have: pre-existing heart disease, bowel disease, allergies. This medication should be used only if clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. Consult your doctor before using any medication while breast-feeding.

DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of any over-the-counter or prescription medication you may take. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
