Patient Comments: Bacterial Vaginosis - Treatment

What was the treatment for your bacterial vaginosis?

Published: July 23

I'm 40 years old and never had bacterial vaginosis before this past year. Today I went to the doctor for the third time in nine months. He gave me prescriptionss for Metronidazole (Flagyl) — both the cream and pills. He said I could take either one, they both work the same. He told me that for his patients that get a re-occurrence four to six times a year, he gives out a bunch of refills and for his patients that get it every month, he recommends taking a pill once a week just to keep a little of the antibiotic in your system. When I became infected with bacterial vaginosis the first time, I had been having sex with a new partner for five months. I wonder if this is only a coincidence. I'm still with the same (and only) partner. For me, I think stress is definitely my trigger. The first time was one week before my reconstructive knee surgery and the second and third times were immediately after a pretty nasty argument and breakup with said boyfriend. I chose to fill the prescription for the cream this time since I used the pills the last two times.

I am a first-time BV patient, and my doctor just prescribed boric acid vaginal suppositories. It apparently works well, especially for those sufferers who have failed with other treatments. The only side effect may be irritation where the infected area is. It is suggested that vitamin E oil, lanolin, or even Vaseline can be placed on those sensitive tissues prior to administering the boric acid.

I was given Flagyl antibiotics. I was told to take a probiotic every day to prevent it from happening again. I am 35 and this is the first time that I have ever had this condition. I am celibate and have been for 3 years so I don't know how I got this. It is just weird. I hope that I never get this again; it is really gross and embarrassing. I just feel dirty all the time even after a shower.

I developed BV during pregnancy. I was informed by the doctor and I've read quite extensively that it is very normal for pregnant women to get this. I had a brownish discharge and a foul odor. I was prescribed Metronidazole 500mg (flagyl). After taking the oral medicine for the full prescription I was still having symptoms. During another prenatal visit, I had the doctor check me again and he confirmed that I did still had BV. So I was prescribed another dosage. The BV seemed to had gone away. Fast forward, I give birth and now 9months later I'm having symptoms again. I'm scheduled for another doctor visit today, to see what my diagnosis is this time. I think the odor is stronger this time. I'm constantly changing panty liners and I keep wipes with me. The fact that this can keep reoccurring is very upsetting. I'm a married woman and this is upsetting to me and my husband and as far as I'm concerned embarrassment.

I am 19 years old and have had BV 5 times in the last 6 months. With my case I had discharge (but without a smell thankfully) pain during sex, and pain during urination after sex. I just went to my doctor today for my most recent case. The last times I have been prescribed the metronidazole gel. This time however, I was prescribed doxycycline hyclate. My doctor also gave me a few tips to keep BV away. 1) drink cranberry juice. She said it can help balance the acidity and alkalinity in your body. 2) eat yogurt, especially Greek yogurt because the cultures in it help regulate bacteria in your body. 3) this is probably the most peculiar tip but she swears it works. Twice a week pour peroxide on a tampon and insert it into your vagina for an hour or 2.She said to leave the tampon in the applicator and pour the peroxide into the hole on the top of the applicator until you feel that it's soaked through, then insert at normal. I am really crossing my fingers that these tips along with the meds will finally get rid of BV!! Hope these may help someone else as well because i know how terrible this infection is and no woman should have to live with it!
