Patient Comments: Arthritis - Effective TreatmentsWhat kinds of treatments have been effective for your arthritis?

I have moderate osteoarthritis in my hips. To minimize the pain, I perform light yoga, range of motion exercises, and core strengthening exercises several times a day. When I start feeling stiff, I do a quick two-minute stretch and add a few leg lifts. At least once a week, I take 600 mg of Ibuprofen, but usually I stick with 250 mg of Aleve or Motrin per day. A 15-minute hot shower before exercising helps warm up the hip muscles, so that exercises are easier to do. Was this comment helpful?Yes

I was diagnosed with arthritis in my hip when I was just in third grade, so I was about 8 years old. I was in and out of the hospital all of the time; it wasn't getting any better. I tried medication, draining the fluid of the hip, and things like that, but nothing helped. So the doctors thought that I would need a hip replacement, but before that, they tried one last thing. They injected something into my hip and it's never been better. I also believe that swimming and dancing were the best two things for my hip. I'm now 14 years old, and I have hardly any problems with my hip! Was this comment helpful?Yes

I am a 39-year-old female, and I have had arthritis in my lower back for eight years. I tried various pain relief methods and none of them helped. I have found that a monthly treatment of acupuncture and light, daily exercise have been the best relief. I occasionally use a heat pad on my back during the winter months but feel the acupuncture is the best form of pain relief for me. Was this comment helpful?Yes

I am 45 years old and have been an athlete all of my life. I was diagnosed with osteo arthitis five years ago. I was a dance/ fitness instructor at the time. I am no longer able to teach but through much trial and error have found that daily yoga stretches (sometimes twice daily) and light cardio several times a week provide me with quite a bit of relief. I also take Glucosamine HCI daily, though I am not certain that it helps. Was this comment helpful?Yes

After years of increasing joint pain and inflammation in my neck, mid and lower back, ankles and wrists, I began to give up hope. Doctors said I had some arthritis so I had tried Celebrex and many other medications that helped the pain symptoms, but did not get rid of them. Any exercise and many other activities (except being in the water) caused so much inflammation and pain that I could hardly move for several days afterward. My daughter was diagnosed with Celiac Disease 9 years ago, (the rest of our family tested negative), so I keep up with the latest news and findings in regards to that and Gluten Free diets. In the past few years I began to read more and more about arthritis and chronic inflammation (of many kinds) being helped by a Gluten Free diet. Finally in desperation, I tried going Gluten Free in January; within 2 weeks I could tell a major difference in my pain and it has only continued to get better since then. I can now move, bend, etc. pain-free for the first time in many years. I'm off all prescription drugs for arthritis and inflammation problems, and am exercising and enjoying many activities that I haven't been able to do in many years.
