WARNING: Breathing problems (apnea) have occurred in infants with heart defects that were treated with alprostadil. Apnea is most often seen in infants who weigh less than 5 lbs (2kg). Apnea usually appears during the first hour that the drug is being given. Therefore, infants should be closely monitored in an appropriate setting during treatment with this drug.

USES: This medication is used for temporary treatment of patent ductus arteriosus, a heart defect in infants, until surgery can be done.

HOW TO USE: This medication is infused into a vein using a special pump. The patient will be monitored closely by trained health care professionals while receiving this medication. Therapy will be evaluated continuously and the risks and benefits considered. Discuss them with the doctor.

SIDE EFFECTS: Fever, irritability, stiffness, jitteriness, flushing, diarrhea, easy bruising or bleeding may occur. If any of these effects continue or become bothersome, inform the doctor. The patient will be watched closely since seizures, a rapid or slow heart rate and breathing trouble can occur while using this medication. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

PRECAUTIONS: This medication is for use in infants only. Tell the doctor of: bleeding tendencies, breathing problems, any allergies.

DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell the doctor of any over-the-counter or prescription medication taken. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.

OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. US residents can call the US national poison hotline at 1-800-222-1222. Canadian residents should call their local poison control center directly. Symptoms of overdose may include interrupted breathing (apnea), slow heartbeat, fever, low blood pressure, weakness, or flushing.

NOTES: Laboratory tests and continuous monitoring will be done to determine the medication effects and to prevent side effects.

MISSED DOSE: This medication is given on a continuous basis. It is important that each dose be received as scheduled.

STORAGE: This medication is freshly prepared each day. Properly discard of any unused medication after 24 hours.
